Creating art is one of the most rewarding things I do in my life. Seeing others get joy from something I have made, knowing I have brightened someone’s day with my work, no matter who they are, and especially in these troubling times, gives me happiness I cannot explain.
I love moments when I look up from my work and realize I had worked all night on a piece and the sunshine coming through the window is that of a new day. Or when I start a piece early in the day and realize when I look up to take a break that ten hours had gone by and my husband is pushing food at me and it’s dark outside!
Most of the artwork I have done in the past is product of my learning process, college projects and practice work for instructed classes, and so I have a large variation of things in a lot of different directions.
But the products of my long nights are different than that of a typical technique project. They are the creations of my imagination that bring on a life of their own. These are my favorite works, and they do not usually begin with brainstorming or plotting or even really thinking about composition or subject matter. They are results of freestyle drawing turned in to images which create inspiration that leads to more inspiration as things develop.
This is one of my favorite ways to create artwork. I love seeing things in person, working from life rather than a photograph to gain my own unique perspective of my subjects, however, there are times when lighting a candle or incense, putting on some music, blocking out the world, and drawing purely from instinct and imagination is the most therapeutic and relaxing way to work.
